Since the outbreak of conflict in South Sudan in mid-December last year, Kakuma has received about 13,000 refugees. An average of 300 refugees daily, mostly women and children, are being received at the camp. WFP is providing food assistance to the refugees at the border upon arrival and also at the refugee camp.

WFP has introduced Fresh Food Vouchers for pregnant and nursing mothers in Dadaab refugee camp in northeastern Kenya. Through this pilot project, mothers receive vouchers to buy fresh food such as meat, fruit and vegetables, which are not part of the usual WFP food basket.

WFP sees the impact of support from private partners every day in the field, but it is still rare for our partners to see how their help has a real impact on the lives of the hungry. KFC employee, Jake Brewer, did just that when he went on a family holiday to Kenya and spent a day in Kibera, one of Africa’s largest slums. “My jaw was practically on the dirt,” Jake says, when he saw how WFP food was helping a mission school provide nutritious meals to hungry children living in Kibera. Here’s Jake's account of his Kenya experience that he shared with colleagues at KFC.

Despite growing up in abject poverty in a drought-prone region of eastern Kenya, 25-year-old Peter Mumo has managed to get an education, go to university and land a job with good prospects. He believes the meals he received from WFP in the 1990s played a critical role in his academic success.

Peter Mumo, 25, who hails from the drought-prone eastern Kenyan district of Makueni, had his life transformed by WFP’s school meals while in the 4th grade. Free to study without hunger pangs, Peter and his classmates excelled. He graduated with a degree in Chemical and Process Engineering from Moi University in Kenya and currently works as a product development manager in Nairobi. In this first person account of his life before and after WFP school meals, Peter tells the story of his triumph against hunger.

Through an innovative cash transfer scheme, WFP is using mobile phones to transfer money in a fast and timely way to those needing assistance in Kenya.

Jacob fled his home in South Sudan as a child and ended up in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. In the camp he remembers receiving WFP food assistance and realised its importance. He is now living in Canada, where he has established a charity through which he hopes to build schools in his native land.

WFP is working with communities on a variety of asset-creation projects - rainwater harvesting for human and livestock use, soil and water conservation, rehabilitation of degraded land and the production of drought-tolerant crops. These assets and the development of related skills enable communities to improve their resilience and increase food sufficiency.
