World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

In late 2012, Liechtenstein provided support to WFP’s operation aiming at providing nutritional assistance to small children in DPR Korea. The contribution enabled WFP to reach nearly 100,000 young children for one month.

When we walked into the yard there was an old traditional Korean house with a roof of black stone, where Han Kyong Suk welcomed us and invited us into her home.

The new WFP Representative for DPR Korea, Mr. Dierk Stegen, a German national, arrived in Pyongyang on 2 March 2013.

On 9 October 2012, H.E. Alexander A. Timonin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to DPRK, visited Pyongyang Biscuit Factory to formally hand over a generous donation of Russian wheat flour to WFP’s work in the country.

Pak Jong Sil is one of over 350,000 mothers in DPR Korea who have been receiving nutritional support from World Food Programme (WFP) during her pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Kaesong City baby home is one of 39 orphanages in DPR Korea receiving food assistance from the World Food Programme (WFP). There are three different types of homes for orphaned children in DPRK, based on age group. Baby homes cater for children between 0 and 4 years-old, children aged 5 and 6 are cared for in child centres, and boarding schools are home to 7-16 year-olds.

The Government of China has recently announced a contribution of US$1 million to WFP’s operation in DPR Korea. The donation will be used to assist children and their mothers who are most vulnerable to undernutrition.

An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) is underway in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea from 24 September to 8 October 2012.
