World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

South African celebrity chef, TV personality and WFP Hunger Advocate Yudhika Sujanani travelled to Lesotho’s highland districts in June to see how WFP is helping people overcome the challenges of hunger and food insecurity during the southern African winter.

Like many others in Lesotho, the farmers of the country's southern highlands are reeling from two consecutive crop failures. WFP is among the UN agencies helping them meet their immediate food needs...while also working to finding longer-term solutions to their problems which many associate with climate change.

In the face of a food crisis in the mountain kingdom, the international humanitarian community has launched an appeal for more than US $38 million to assist the most vulnerable as well as to provide longer-term assistance to some 275,000 people.

There are more than a quarter million people living with HIV in Lesotho. In four of the country's districts, WFP is supporting some of the most vulnerable HIV+ people with nutritional services to counter high levels of malnutrition and anaemia.

When she was a child, Lesotho’s education minister was herself a beneficiary of the school meals programme at her local school. Now that she’s part of her country’s government,  she’s doing all she can to ensure that kids in her country get the same advantage.

Children living among the remote hills and valleys of Lesotho have a lot to contend with apart from a long walk to school. So a warm meal once they get there makes a real difference.
