World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

Learning that she was HIV+ and that her husband had hidden the truth of his condition from her was a double shock for Florence, who lives in Liberia’s capital Monrovia. But with support from WFP, she has turned her life around and is hopeful about her family’s future.

In early September, WFP nutrition focal points and their government counterparts from 18 countries across West Africa gathered in Dakar for a four-day workshop. 
 

 US Ambassador to UN food agencies Ertharin Cousin* visited Liberia to see for herself how WFP is assisting the refugees who fled the violence in Côte d'Ivoire, host communities and other vulnerable populations. 

In the months following the crisis in Côte d'Ivoire, WFP has provided food assistance to tens of thousands of Ivorian refugees in Liberia. Each has a moving story to tell. Here is one of them.
 

Nimba County in Liberia has received some 43,000 refugees from Côte d’Ivoire. Some are in camps for displaced persons but the vast majority are staying with host families in villages close to the border where WFP is helping the host families with food assistance.
 

High food prices over the past year and growing concern over the effects of climate change have combined to put global food security at the top of the international agenda. A growing consensus among experts and policy makers is that a part of that solution lies in the hands of smallholder farmers.

With tensions lingering in the West African nation of Côte d'Ivoire, WFP is bringing food assistance to some 150,000 Ivorians who fled to Liberia to escape the recent conflict. WFP is ramping up efforts to assist people displaced by violence in Cote d’Ivoire with a series of airlifts that will help feed over 75,000 people around the country. Meanwhile, a logistically challenging operation is underway to feed some 150,000 refugees in remote areas of neighboring Liberia.

When fighting broke out in Cote d’Ivoire last December, Zeh Apoline—an elderly fruit vendor who lost her husband and three children during Cote d’Ivoire’s 2002 Civil War—wasted no time in fleeing across the border into Liberia. She’s now recovering from the trip, which left her sick and exhausted, with the help of regular, nutritious meals.

Tia Paul’s family of 12 depend on the cocoa and coffee farm that he left behind in November when fighting broke out across Cote d’Ivoire. Though lucky enough to have relatives in Liberia to stay with, he says he’s worried what could happen to his farm while he’s away.
