When Maran Narma was younger, she and her family fled their home in rural Liberia to escape the violence engulfing the country. While displaced from her home, she received food assistance from WFP. The experience spurred her to join WFP later in life as a programme officer. Maran tells us about her life at both ends of WFP's work.

Nimba County in Liberia has received some 43,000 refugees from Côte d’Ivoire. Some are in camps for displaced persons but the vast majority are staying with host families in villages close to the border where WFP is helping the host families with food assistance.

WFP is ramping up efforts to assist people displaced by violence in Cote d’Ivoire with a series of airlifts that will help feed over 75,000 people around the country. Meanwhile, a logistically challenging operation is underway to feed some 150,000 refugees in remote areas of neighboring Liberia.

When fighting broke out in Cote d’Ivoire last December, Zeh Apoline—an elderly fruit vendor who lost her husband and three children during Cote d’Ivoire’s 2002 Civil War—wasted no time in fleeing across the border into Liberia. She’s now recovering from the trip, which left her sick and exhausted, with the help of regular, nutritious meals.
