Tripoli's residents may be shocked if they race to buy food and are confronted with unsubsidized prices, said Christiane Berthiaume, a World Food Program spokeswoman. "They had a public distribution system with prices of food that were very very low, and so people are used to not paying a lot of money for their food. So is that going to work?"

South Korea plans to provide up to US$1 million in cash to Libyan rebels, officials said Monday, (..). "So far, we have supported Libya via international organizations including the World Food Program," the official said. "From now, however, we will expand our direct support for the NTC."

The United Nations refugee agency and its partners in Tunisia are distributing food for more than 55,000 Libyans who have fled the fighting in their homeland to help them prepare their evening meals during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan. (..)Some 400 staff from UNHCR and other local and international organizations, including the World Food Programme (WFP), have helped pack, transport and distribute the food at more than 34 distribution points across southern Tunisia.

A four-day UN joint mission to Misrata has found that while food assistance from the World Food Programme (WFP) and other humanitarian actors has led to an improvement in the food situation in the port city, rising food prices and the lack of money for people to buy food mean the situation remains a concern.

A United Nations humanitarian assessment mission to the Libyan port city of Misrata has found that high food prices, lack of money and shortages of medical supplies and other essential items have left residents in need of continued assistance. (..) “The only way we can reach the population is by sea,” said Azhar Mehdi Salih of the UN World Food Programme (WFP). “The road from Benghazi to Misrata is too dangerous due to the ongoing fighting,” he said.

The Libyan government is claiming that NATO and anti-government rebels were carrying out a coordinated air, sea and land attack on the strategic town of al-Brega, but the alliance sloughed off the assertion. (..) The World Food Programme said that, since April, it has distributed 2,634 metric tons of food in Misrata to 125,000 people.

The Arab Spring was supposed to bring democracy, peace and prosperity. (..) In Libya, the fighting between government and opposition forces has severely harmed the supply of food and medication, particularly to the Western Mountain Region which is entirely dependant on outside supplies, said Reem Nada, a Cairo-based public information officer for the World Food Program. Libya is almost entirely dependent on food imports but the country’s ports have been shuttered for months.

Health care and food supplies are deteriorating in Libya, but the Gaddafi government has managed to keep paying wages and subsidies in areas under its control, the International Committee of the Red Cross said on Tuesday. (..) U.N. aid workers who reached four towns in the Nafusa mountain area found that people lacked food and had sold off most livestock, the World Food Programme said on Tuesday.
