As humanitarian access increases in Libya, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has dispatched food assistance to the south of the country and to people who have fled heavy fighting in the town of Bani Walid. Since the crisis began, WFP has distributed, through its partners, food assistance to 800,000 people in Libya.

CAIRO – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is providing logistical support for the humanitarian relief effort in Libya, sending food and other urgent supplies including water, medicine and fuel to Tripoli. WFP is also scaling up food assistance to meet the needs of the most vulnerable internally displaced people in Tripoli, the coastal areas and the Nafusa Mountain Region.

CAIRO – A four-day UN joint mission to Misrata has found that while food assistance from the World Food Programme (WFP) and other humanitarian actors has led to an improvement in the food situation in the port city, rising food prices and the lack of money for people to buy food mean the situation remains a concern.

CAIRO – The World Food Programme has distributed more than 6,000 metric tons of food assistance to more than 543,000 people across Libya since the start of its North Africa Emergency Operation, four months ago. Working with partners, including the Libyan Red Crescent, more than 282,000 people in eastern Libya, and 261,000 in western Libya have received food assistance.

CAIRO – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has delivered vital food assistance to more than 500,000 people affected by the conflict in Libya. The agency has provided food for civilians in conflict areas, internally displaced people, migrant workers, and vulnerable groups such as widows, orphans and the disabled.

CAIRO – A ship carrying vital food assistance from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) arrived in Misrata today. The ship, which was chartered by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is delivering more than 420 metric tons of food– enough to feed 25,000 people for one month. It is also carrying a WFP team, part of a UN interagency mission, which will conduct a rapid needs assessment of the humanitarian situation on the ground. WFP is concerned about food security in Libya as stocks are being consumed without adequate levels of replenishment.

Fighting is blocking access to the Western Mountains of Libya where the World Food Programme believes food needs could be immense. I am increasingly concerned about the humanitarian situation and access to food for people trapped by the violence in this area. I am appealing to all parties for safe access and for an immediate ceasefire, so that we are able to assess the humanitarian situation and deliver food assistance.

CAIRO – A ship chartered by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has delivered more than 500 metric tons of food assistance, three ambulances, medical supplies and other relief items on behalf of humanitarian partners to the Libyan town of Misrata. This is the second time this month that a WFP-chartered vessel has delivered food and relief to the people of Misrata.
