LILONGWE – The Government of Ireland has announced a contribution to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) of more than US$1.3 million (MWK .5 billion) to boost food and nutrition security among some of the poorest households in Malawi.

LILONGWE – The United Kingdom has contributed US$22 million (MWK 8.4 billion) to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to assist Malawian families who are unable to meet their basic food needs. This contribution will enable WFP to provide food assistance to some 910,000 people for several months of the ‘lean season’, between now and March when the next harvest is due.

LILONGWE –The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has contributed food and cash valued at US$18.2 million (MK 6.1 billion) to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to assist Malawians facing food shortages due to a combination of bad weather during the growing season as well as high food prices.

LILONGWE – The Government of Malawi along with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and other partners yesterday launched a relief operation to meet a rise in Malawi’s food needs due to bad weather during the growing season and high food prices. The areas of greatest need are more widely spread than last year and include the traditional surplus areas of central and northern Malawi.

LILONGWE – The UK Government, through UKaid, has contributed US$7.8 million (£5 million pounds sterling) to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to help provide school meals to children in Malawi.

The Government of Malawi has donated to the UN World Food Programme an extra 47,466 metric tons of maize from the country’s Strategic Grain Reserve. This allocation, valued at $11.6 million (MK 4.18 billion), will bolster relief operations for nearly 2 million people identified by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee as food insecure. This brings the total Government of Malawi relief contributions since August to 72,466 tones, worth $ 17.1 million (MK 6.2 billion).

LILONGWE – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has joined forces with the Government of Malawi and mobile telecommunications company Airtel to launch an innovative cash transfer programme to help more than 100,000 people affected by food shortages in central and southern Malawi. Funding for the initiative is being provided by UKAID.
