WFP Activities
WFP supports vulnerable people in Mali to preserve livelihoods and to cope with droughts and other natural disasters. Activities are designed to improve the health and nutrition conditions of vulnerable children and increase the food security of poor households. WFP has been active in Mali since 1964. WFP’s current main operations are under Country Programme (CP) and Emergency Operations (EMOP).
In line with the Government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP), the CP has five components that contribute to: increase school enrolment and attendance through school feeding; enhance resilience to natural disasters among vulnerable food-insecure rural communities;  improve Mali’s food security system by supporting the Government’s structures; provide targeted supplementary feeding for children aged 6–59 months affected by moderate acute malnutrition and malnourished pregnant and lactating women; urban cash-for-work to increase vulnerable households’ access to food.
Under the EMOP, WFP aims to reach food-insecure and vulnerable people, predominantly from the north, but also displaced households and fragile host families in the south who have already been hit hard by the 2012 Sahel drought. Assistance will be provided through the following interventions: i) targeted food and cash assistance; ii) blanket supplementary feeding to prevent acute malnutrition; iii) targeted supplementary feeding to treat moderate acute malnutrition; and iv) emergency school feeding.
WFP is also working to connect Malian farmers to markets through the Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative. The P4P initiative aims to reinforce the capacities of small-holder farmers to improve procurement practices, food processing and commercialization as a means to increase their daily incomes. . P4P aims to enable small farmers to become competitive cereal suppliers on local and regional markets. This will realign the way WFP buys food to better address the root causes of hunger.
