WFP has deployed several national staff to Sittwe to provide logistical, programmatic as well as administrative support to restore operational capacity of the team in Sittwe. So far, international staff members has not been able to travel to Sittwe after the incident as there has been a delay in Government’s approval of travel authorizations to Rakhine State since the breakout of the civil unrest. Such delay is of great concern as it limits the capacity of WFP’s response to the crisis. The issue has been raised in various occasions and together with all humanitarian and development partners in Rakhine, WFP will continue to advocate to the Government for granting full and sustained access to Rakhine.

School Meals
20 January 2015

In rural areas of Myanmar, less than half of all children complete primary school. High dropout rates in primary school remain a serious concern, especially in remote areas. In 1996, WFP launched school feeding in northern Rakhine, which has some of the lowest education and food security indicators in Myanmar. Ever since, WFP has expanded its school feeding programme also to Chin, Magway, Shan, and Wa. In 2015, WFP intends to implement school feeding in 1,700 pre-primary and primary schools catering to 184,000 children.
