Speakers at a media briefing on Wednesday pointed out that poverty and social injustice were among the major reasons of extremism and conflicts in Pakistan.(..) He highlighted key findings of recently launched Food Insecurity Report 2009, which has been jointly published by World Food Programme, SDPI and Sustainable Development Commission.

As temperatures drop below freezing in parts of Pakistan, United Nations (UN) agencies stock essential life saving items to cater to the emerging needs of the flood victims across Pakistan. (..)UN agencies have made arrangements to stock medicines, food supplies, and winter kits to facilitate the flood victims. The World Food Program (WFP) is distributing food to an average of 6-7 million people across the flood-stricken areas every month.

The return of the internally-displaced people (IDPs) to the troubled Orakzai Agency has entered into its third phase in which a total of 15,000 families will be repatriated. (..) To facilitate the returning IDPs, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is providing them transportation with the help of the Fata Development Management Authority (FDMA). The World Food Programme (WFP) is providing them with food stock for one month at the embossing points in Hangu and Kohat.

Dozens of people with outstretched arms welcome the chopper as its rotors kick up swirls of gritty dust from the cracked, mud-caked earth of Haji Jan Mohammad — a poor agricultural village transformed into a desolate island by waist-deep floodwaters that stretch to the horizon in every direction. (..) Jackie Dent, a World Food Programme spokesperson, said that although isolated outlying villages are becoming "few and far between as waters recede and access improves," more are still being found.

In the summer months, Pakistan’s remote Gilgit Baltistan is busy with mountaineers climbing the world’s highest mountains. (..) WFP has so far dispatched over 5,000 tons of food to the region, ensuring food security to an estimated 110,000 people affected by floods and now bracing for winter.

Utror nestles in the mountains in Swat in north-west Pakistan and is bracing itself for winter. The rocky peaks which surround it are already covered with snow. (..) "Our crops have all been washed away," she told me. "And look up at the ceiling. The roof was badly damaged and I don't have the money to repair it. The only food we have now is brought to us by foreigners. We live on that." She was referring to the international aid supplied to Utror and surrounding communities by the World Food Programme and the US government.

While big emergencies with millions of victims dominate newspaper headlines, every year WFP responds to dozens of other "minor" emergencies that often go overlooked. The numbers may be smaller, but the misery is the same, which is why WFP Emergency Response expert Amy Horton says there's no such thing as a minor emergency.

The Europe-Aid Director for Asia and Central Asia, Dirk Meganck, vowed that the European Union will continue its support to combat rising food prices and ensuring food security in Pakistan.(..) Lauding the role of the implementing partners, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Program (WFP), Meganck expressed his pleasure to see that the aid of 40 million Euros had been utilised properly and helped rebuild communities to provide a sustainable environment.

Enormous funding is required to meet the needs for coverage of the upcoming months as new challenges are emerging on a daily basis, stated Stacey Winston of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Unocha). According to Jackie Dent, press officer at the World Food Programme (WFP), every day new challenges are coming forward as the water recedes. “We are identifying people daily whose needs have to be met on time,” said Dent.
