The World Food Programme of the United Nations has recently provided rice assistance to more than a thousand flood survivors from 12 barangays of Malita town in Davao del Sur.

President Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" C. Aquino III will visit Sulu Friday to personally lead the distribution of relief goods to some 300 families who were victims of flash floods that hit two towns and six villages last week. (..) Sinarimbo said the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has also granted the ARMM government's request for rice and canned goods for the displaced families in four affected towns.

Twenty-five farmers from a remote village in Maguindanao province on Wednesday proved they, too, can produce high variety onions similar to those being produced by farmers in Luzon. (..) The 25 farmers are beneficiaries of the Food for Training Project funded by the Department of Agriculture-Maguindanao and the UN World Food Programme in Sitio Guiate, Barangay Solon.

WFP brought KC, the Philippines' national ambassador against hunger, on a visit to the agency's operations in Uganda's impoverished Karamoja region. The team also visited the grain basket district of Kapchorwa, a place which showbiz linguists quickly passed off as chorva-chorva (in Filipino, anu-ano, meaning just about anything). KC said the whole experience was an eye-opener as it was also life-changing.

Japan has earmarked $700,000 to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and other food-insecure households in conflict-affected areas of Central Mindanao through the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in the Philippines.

The United Nation’s World Food Programme will distribute tomorrow (Feb. 5) rice assistance to the 812 families in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, who are just recovering from the recent flood. Adelaida Badilla, municipal social welfare and development officer of Sta. Cruz town, informed that delegation from WFP will distribute one sack of rice each to the affected families from five puroks in Barangay Darong.

Pam Pagunsan, a communications specialist at the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said `rido’ also leads to the temporary displacement of families, who are often difficult to access because of the security situation. "In 2010, UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP) conducted a joint nutrition and food security assessment, which concluded that areas affected by armed conflict had poor nutritional status and therefore faced higher risks of disease and death," she said.

Land grabs have grabbed global attention. It's on the agenda at the World Economic Forum this week, and as the trend for large land acquisitions accelerates, it has moved from being primarily a story about Middle Eastern petrodollars pouring into Africa, to a much more widely spread phenomenon affecting many parts of south-east Asia, such as the Phillipines, as well as Latin America. (..) The US environmentalist Lester Brown points out in his new book, World on the Edge, that in 2009 Saudi Arabia received its first shipment of rice produced on land it had acquired in Ethiopia while at the same time the World Food Programme was feeding 5 million Ethiopians.

Actress and United Nations-World Food Program (UN-WFP) national ambassador KC Concepcion recently shared her experiences from her trip to remote areas in Uganda, Africa. In a press conference on Wednesday, Concepcion said what she experienced in Africa totally changed her belief and perspective about life.
