AWEIL –In many parts of South Sudan the rains are a curse as much as a blessing. Heavy rain often leads to flooding which damages crops or washes them away entirely, leaving people even more vulnerable to food insecurity. The World Food Programme (WFP) through its Food Assistance For Asset-creation (FFA) activities helps communities to strengthen their resilience to such shocks. In Northern Bahr el Ghazal State several communities have optedto construct infrastructure that prevents flood waters from destroying crops and homes.

The villagers in Ganyiel, a small village surrounded by swampland in southern Unity State of South Sudan, have become accustomed to seeing planes airdrop bags of cereal and pulses but seeing vegetable oil falling from the sky was something new. This happened in May when the World Food Programme (WFP) carried out its first successful airdrop of vegetable oil.

Two million people have been forced from their homes since December 2013, which marks the beginning of the South Sudan conflict. Today, an estimated 2.5 million men, women, and children face acute hunger and uncertainty of where their next meal will come from. It is one year since conflict erupted in South Sudan. The fighting has seriously affected food security in the country, leaving it on the brink of a hunger catastrophe. WFP and its partners have been at the forefront of efforts to bring lifesaving assistance to over 2.5 million people affected by the conflict. All these people just want peace so that they can return to their lives. Two women who received assistance from WFP and its partners in Mabior (Jonglei State) where WFP assisted nearly 40,000 people in November and in Kadet (Unity State) where the agency provided food to 10,000 people in November, talked about their experiences and wishes.

KADET - Doru Gladys Oliver had only been back in her home country, South Sudan, for two months when fighting erupted. The 20-year-old now works as an enumerator for WFP travelling to hard-to-reach areas to provide assistance to people in need. She tells us her story.

Since March 2014 Musa Abdallah has been travelling with emergency mobile teams to reach vulnerable people who have been isolated by conflict in some of the most food-insecure areas of the country. The South Sudanese national became a team leader in October and tells us about the challenges he faced in his new role while in the village of Mogok in Jonglei State.
