From Ebola-hit countries in Africa to Syria, Iraq and the Philippines, food assistance played its part again this year in helping families get through emergencies. Here are 10 people in 10 different countries who received assistance in 2014 thanks to WFP’s supporters – governments, companies and individuals.

A violent summer in Gaza left thousands of its residents homeless and in shelters. The two-month conflict destroyed homes, businesses and basic services. But one thing was working – WFP food distribution, the landmark vouchers and the e-card programme, which was launched in Palestine five years ago as a first in the Middle East.

With a deteriorating security situation in Gaza and the West Bank, WFP scaled up its monitoring of stocks in shops and food prices to assess the impact of the current situation on Palestinian livelihoods and food security. WFP provides food assistance to 604,000 people in Palestine.

JERUSALEM – After a journey of 21 days, a ship carrying wheat grain from the United States of America delivered its cargo for WFP’s food assistance operations in Gaza and the West Bank.

Micronutrient deficiencies and obesity - the "double burden" of malnutrition facing many developing countries - are interlinked with poverty and are closely related to access to healthy, nutritious food, dietary habits and physical activity. WFP is tackling malnutrition in Palestine that is mostly a result of families’ inability to buy healthy and nutritious foods due to high food prices.

WFP, in cooperation with local authorities, distributed emergency food assistance and vouchers to food insecure Palestinians who were affected by the December winter storm. The agricultural sector in Palestine is expecting heavy losses, while considerable damages are foreseen to infrastructure and businesses.

The only Palestinian salt producer on the shores of the Dead Sea produces 100 tons of salt per month for WFP operations, providing food assistance in Gaza and on the West Bank, and also valuable investment in an area where the economy is struggling.

In the early days of this year, a snow storm followed by torrential rains and flooding wreaked extensive damage to whole areas and communities in the West Bank. The Jadallah family in the Tulkarem village of Anabta are one of many whose lives were swept away by what is said to be the worst natural disaster in the village in the last 50 years.

After a massive snow storm swept through the State of Palestine, WFP and its partners were immediately on the ground in affected communities assessing the damage, identifying humanitarian needs and stepping up relief efforts.
