The World Food Program (WFP) has said it will preposition up to eighty thousand (80,000) tons of food in all the ten states of Southern Sudan which can feed about half of the population in the region for six months. This was declared on Wednesday in a meeting between the Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, and the head of the World Food Program in the region, Amer Daoudi.

Worsening security in Sudan's Darfur region is forcing aid agencies to cut or suspend some relief programmes, the United Nations said on Thursday. (..)The U.N.'s World Food Programme this month said more than 400,000 Darfuris might miss out on food aid in June because aid convoys were struggling to get to them.

Angus McKenzie looks at it like this. “People are dying,” he says. “They need food, and we can grow it. It’s pretty simple.” (..) But this year, after two years of effort, the Canadians produced their first harvest: 8,000 kilograms of sorghum, which they distributed to local villagers and other hungry Sudanese through the World Food Program, the food agency of the United Nations.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) inaugurated a $55 million program in the semi-autonomous region of South Sudan aimed at helping farmers there to develop their agricultural potential. Last month, the World Food Program (WFP) warned that South Sudan is facing a major food crisis that could lead to a “free fall” impacting 4.3 million people living off assistance.

Huge funding shortfalls for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) are threatening all its operations in Sudan, including school feeding.(..)Marian Yun of WFP told me that "the Sudan operation is facing major shortfalls that might prohibit this expansion as planned. We are in the process of re-prioritizing what we can do given the funding we have so far received, which is sufficient to take us through until August when we run out of food and resources."

The top UN official in south Sudan warned on Friday that the impoverished region faced a major food crisis that could lead to "free fall," with half of its residents relying on aid this year.(..)The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has pre-positioned 60,000 tonnes of food all over the states which are in trouble before seasonal rains which could hamper deliveries in the region, Grande said.

As three days of voting got underway yesterday in one of the most complex elections staged in Africa, her message was simple: "I wanted to vote for freedom, to be free."(..)The World Food Programme feeds up to four million people.

Sudan donated Ethiopian some 20,000 tons of sorghum in solidarity with its neighboring country which is affected by harsh drought condition in large parts of the Horn of Africa country.(..)In its latest food security assessment from October 2009 to February this year the WFP said erratic rainfall caused an overall reduction in the harvest of the main agricultural season (Meher), estimated at 10-11% compared to 2008/2009.
