Overview
With its southern region now an independent country on its own, Sudan will continue to face humanitarian challenges due to ongoing conflict and insecurity in its western region of Darfur and an escalation of conflict in the Abyei area and the state of South Kordofan.

In Darfur region, about 2 million people have been displaced by conflict that broke out in 2003.  The ongoing conflict has caused a breakdown of trade and markets and disrupted people’s livelihoods.  It has also hindered the delivery of humanitarian assistance with frequent restriction of movements of aid workers.
An escalation of conflict in the Abyei area and in the state of South Kordofan displaced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and sources of livelihood.  In the east and in central Sudan, strained livelihoods and economic dislocation are major concerns.
