THE World Food Programme (WFP) is working with the ministry of health to implement a Food by Prescription programme for people living with HIV. WFP Country Director Karla Hershey said the programme changed the lives of people living with HIV. He said supplementary food for those who were malnourished helped them tolerate and adhere to their drug therapy so they could return to work and support their families.

EACH year, on average, World Food Programme (WFP), the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, feeds more than 90 million people in more than 70 countries. In 2010, WFP reached almost 46 million people in more than 40 countries in Africa. The organisation’s assistance on the continent focuses on emergency relief, post-crisis recovery and longer-term programmes to reduce chronic hunger and malnutrition.

The impact of the current financial crisis is severe and according to the World Food Programme, annual production of the staple maize since 2000 has gradually dropped - from an average of 100,000 tons to about 70,000 tons - a consequence of erratic weather, high input and fuel costs, HIV/AIDS and the declining use of “improved agricultural practices”.

THE ministry of health will soon launch a food by prescription project coordinated by the Swaziland National Nutrition Council. (..) The Swaziland National Nutrition Council is coordinating the programme with the assistance of the World Food Programme as a partner.

Swaziland is part of the 72 countries benefitting from the WFP food supply programme targetting over 82.7 million people around the world. This was announced by celebrity chef Martin Kobald during his two- day visit in the Kingdom where he was accompanied by TV presenter and actress Hlubi Mboya.

Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital staff and pupils had the privilege of talking and mingling with actress Hlubi Mboya, popularly known as Nandipha on South African soapie, Isidingo. (..) Mboya was last year chosen as the World Food Programme (WFP) Ambassador. The actress is in the country to visit orphanages that receive funding from the WFP as part of her a tour against hunger together with SA chef, Martin Kobald and Michelle Da Silva who is Kobald’s Personal Assistant.

THE United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will now provide technical assistance to the Swaziland Vulnerability Assessment Committee (SVAC) to incorporate gender and HIV into its annual vulnerability assessments.

Heavy rain since November 2010 has ensured crops in the traditionally dry parts of food-insecure Swaziland have enough water, but for the 80 percent of the population who are subsistence farmers on communal land, the showers are less welcome, due to the sudden growth spurt of weeds, and flooded fields. (..) Erratic weather, high fuel and input costs, the impact of HIV/AIDS and poor agricultural practices have affected the production of the staple maize in Swaziland over the past decade, according to the World Food Programme. The average annual yield has dropped from over 100,000 tons in 2000 to 70,000 tons.

ESICOJENI Foundation officially opened two school kitchens at Bambitje and Mahlabaneni primary schools on Friday. (..) The kitchen project in the two schools was implemented jointly with the World Food Programme (WFP). It is aimed at improving hygiene and food preparation conditions in schools benefitting from the national schools meals programme run by government.
