About a quarter of Swaziland's one million people require food assistance (..). The UN World Food Programme (WFP) and Swaziland's Ministry of Agriculture and others have established pilot food for work programmes that could see wider application in other parts of the food insecure country. "WFP's main focus is on ensuring that social safety nets are incorporated as it gears itself towards providing hunger solutions to the government of Swaziland in line with the UN agency's global shift from food aid to food assistance," Sheila Sisulu, WFP's deputy director for Hunger Solutions, said on a recent visit to Swaziland.

THE Regional Director for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa, Mustapha Darboe, who arrived in the country last week to meet with relevant ministries, concluded his visit by touring WFP operations in the field.

UNITED Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has donated pallets valued at over E45 000 (about US$6 000) to government to support ongoing food assistance programmes in the country. The pallets, which are utilised in the storage of food commodities in warehouses, were donated to the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) yesterday.

Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) member states have been challenged to implement effective agriculture policies that would aid in reducing poverty levels in the regional bloc. This Swaziland HIV clinic isn’t your typical doctor’s office. It’s located near a truck stop, and nurse Thabsile Sithole’s patients are truck drivers and the prostitutes they visit. (..)Sithole’s clinic operated by the Northstar Alliance, an unusual charity conceived by the World Food Programme. “AIDS was having a huge impact on the transportation business in Africa,” explains Luke Disney, the charity’s executive director.

Farmers have called for more government support and an involvement in the creation of policies and programmes designed to uplift the agricultural sector. (..) Co-operating partners engaged in Disaster Relief Programmes representing the disaster Management Agency(NDMA), world Food Programmes, Cango and Non- Governmental Organisation engaged in food security, yesterday held a meeting at the WFP offices to discuss the on going and the planned food aid programs with special emphasis on strengthening co-ordination among all stakeholders.

Population growth, adherence to land distribution customs, and a small country are combining to make Swaziland a crowded place, rapidly running out of room to achieve food security.
The population has doubled to more than one million since independence from Britain in 1968, but according to custom each Swazi son is given a portion of land on the family farm, located on communal Swazi Nation Land administered by traditional chiefs, to build a home, cultivate maize and graze cattle.
