Swaziland faces a crisis arising from the combinedeffects of HIV/AIDS, poverty and recurrent drought. The country has the highest HIV prevalence rate in the world with 39.2 percent of pregnant women attending antenatal clinics and 26 percent of the workforce age group (15 to 49 years) infected with HIV.

Swaziland has the highest HIV prevalence rate in the world: 39.2 percent among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics and 26 percent of the economically productive age group (15-49 years) are infected. The Government of Swaziland declared HIV and AIDS a national disaster in 1999. Due to the impact of AIDS, Swaziland has seen an increase in the mortality rate.
