The U.N.'s World Food Programme (WFP) delivered rations to a record 3.8 million people in Syria in December, but civilians in eastern provinces and besieged towns near the capital remain out of reach, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos arrived in Syria Saturday as a flurry of aid meetings are underway in the conflict-torn country. (..) A couple of days ago, the director of the World Food Program Ertharin Cousin also visited Syria and held talks with top officials, including Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi and Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.

The World Food Program is based in Rome. Its executive director is Ertharin Cousin, an American with many years of experience in food issues in the nonprofit, corporate, and government sectors. “When we created this category of level three emergencies, which the U.N. and the nonprofit community work together globally to ensure that we meet the needs of those who are impacted by the most serious emergencies, we all said, what would we do if we had three of them? And now we have four,” said Cousin.

The ambassador to the United Nations from Jordan, the nation thrust into the rotating presidency of a polarized Security Council, said Monday that he would renew his appeal to the 15-member governing body to visit countries that shelter millions of Syrian refugees, including his own, which hosts more than 500,000 Syrians.

Food is available, but prices have risen dramatically, putting some ordinary items out of the reach of families already struggling to get by. Six UN agencies - Unicef, WFP, UNHCR, IOM, OCHA, and UNDSS - contributed to the convoy which consisted of 10 trucks laden with supplies. Among these were two truck-loads of UNICEF supplies, including soap, washing powder, and family water kits.

The United Nations said Sunday that it has completed the first aid airlift from Iraq to Syria, providing much-needed supplies to a difficult-to-access region of the war-torn country. It was the last of a 24-flight airlift by UNHCR, the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) and children's agency UNICEF, which started on December 15.

The camp in Harmanli is just one of the places the refugees are housed. (..) The number of Syrian refugees reaching Bulgaria is still tiny — around 6,500 so far this year — compared with more than two million who have sought shelter in Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan.

Half a million people across war-hit Syria have been wounded, many of them lacking access to basic healthcare and treatment, the International Committee for the Red Cross said on Sunday. (..) The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said on Monday that half of Syria’s population of around 23 million is “food insecure” and nearly a third needs urgent assistance.“Recent assessments show that almost half the population inside Syria is food insecure and close to 6.3 million people need urgent, life-saving, food assistance,” WFP said in a statement.

The UN has launched its biggest ever appeal for humanitarian aid after exhausting funds raised to help Syria this year, and said nearly three-quarters of the country's population will need help in 2014.It estimates that close to half of Syria's population has been displaced, while the World Food Programme says a similar number need "urgent, life-saving food assistance".The former British foreign secretary David Miliband, now president of the International Rescue Committee, said large parts of the Syrian population were threatened by starvation.

As the UN launches its biggest ever aid appeal, distribution centres in Syria are providing thousands of people with basic supplies. The World Food Programme's Matthew Hollingworth told the BBC the people seeking help "perhaps a year or two years ago would have been living a pretty good life."
