The UN World Food Programme (WFP) in January completed a pilot project to give cash to more than 7,000 economically vulnerable residents of the Ayni District in Sughd Oblast. (..) "The WFP tries to help families in the winter when income from seasonal work and cash remittances from abroad diminish greatly," said Alzira Ferreira, the WFP Tajikistan country director.

Right now, funding is a major issue with WFP facing a $2.7 million shortage for 2011. The World Food Programme relies on voluntary donations from the international community.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) plans to launch in January 2011 an ambitious aid programme for Tajik tuberculosis (TB) patients, according to a WFP statement published November 17 by Asiaplus.tj. The WFP will begin a three-year, US $7m campaign of giving wheat flour, vegetable oil, split peas and salt to every TB patient registered in the Directly Observed Treatment, Short Course (DOTS) programme. Family members will also receive food if their primary income source is too sick to work.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is launching a new school feeding project to provide nearly 370,000 poor children in rural primary schools with a daily nourishing meal, According to the WFP CO in Tajikistan. (..) “WFP is committed to giving critical support to children who will become the future citizens of the Republic of Tajikistan,” said WFP Country Director Alzira Ferreira. “For over 40 years, WFP school feeding has been proven to give children the boost they need to go to school every day and concentrate on their learning process.”

Over the first six months of this year, Sughd province has received 1.74 million US dollars worth of humanitarian aid, which is 2.34 US dollars, or 57.38 percent, fewer than in the same period of last year (..). “Humanitarian aid has come to the province mainly through the UN World food Program (WFP), German Agro Action (GAA) as well as local non-governmental organizations Sogdiana-777 (Chkalovsk), Shulai Umed (Panjakent) and some others”.
