WFP staged a lively and colourful “welcome ceremony” for the arrival of a large Russian donation of fortified wheat flour in the capital of Dushanbe. Russian diplomats later visited a school in rural Tajikistan where Russia supports a WFP school meals programme.

In a unique climate-change project, WFP has launched Tajikistan’s largest tree-planting initiative by an international agency. As well as providing a future source of food for the hungry poor, the project allows WFP to offset some of its carbon footprint. “When the apricots and mulberries start to grow, I will make preserves from them and store them in this same container,” says one beneficiary. “We will have fruit all winter long." The poor village of Kisht, on the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border, has never managed to send a girl to university. So community leaders are delighted about a new WFP programme which should mean girls stay at school longer. Now, they hope, maybe one will take the next step.

WFP has welcomed US government contributions in September totaling US$110.7 million for the hungry poor in 11 countries from Latin America to Asia. Nearly half the resources were targeted to Sudan, home to WFP’s single-largest operation in the world.
