World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

On a crowded residential street in Dar es Salaam, a thriving community of small and medium-scale millers works among shops and homes. Some150 millers are running complex operations from their very basic premises, buying maize and processing it to supply maize flour to the rest of the country.

In May 2013, WFP Tanzania sponsored its first Farmers’ Market in Dar es Salaam, featuring more than 15 vendors from around the country.

Fortunata is a single mother of four living in Ameru, a small village in the Hai district of northwest Tanzania. High food prices and her community's dependence on agriculture in a region where rainfall is irregular and droughts are severe meant it was a daily struggle for Fortunata to feed her family.

An all-female team supported by the UN World Food Programme reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on 5 March. The 10 climbers – three African women and seven Nepali veterans of a successful Mount Everest expedition in 2008 – undertook the challenge to highlight the importance of girls’ education and school meals. They recorded video messages on the mountain for International Women’s Day on 8 March and, since their descent, have been telling students of their exploits in schools in Dar-es-Salaam and Arusha.

They are climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro for many reasons - to get to the top, to realise their own dreams - but, most of all, to show the world what women can achieve. That is why they believe that education is so important for girls everywhere.

DAR-ES-SALAAM – The Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Ertharin Cousin, today begins a two-day visit to Tanzania.
 

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Food and Agriculture Agencies in Rome has completed a one-week tour of WFP, FAO, IFAD and USAID projects throughout Tanzania.

WFP has been providing food to Sanganigwa Street Childrens’ Home in Kigoma, northern Tanzania, for more than 10 years, giving homeless youth the chance to grow healthy and get an education.

Vodacom Tanzania and WFP have embarked on a partnership that will use ‘mobile money’ to help food-insecure communities get better information about nutrition and health.

In the shadow of Mount Meru in north-western Tanzania lies Patanumbe, a small village where water is scarce and farmers' livelihoods are dependent on irregular rainfall. In recent times, villagers have borne the brunt of changing weather patterns and prolonged droughts. Families struggle to put food on the table, sometimes resorting to the sale of livestock to get by.
