World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

Two United Nations agencies today appealed to donors to support an increased food assistance package to help many of the 149,000 Burundian refugees in camps in Tanzania to return home. WFP and the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) warned that without funding, the initiative may collapse.

WFP has hailed the increasing support and commitment of 12 new European Union Member States towards achieving the number one Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of halving poverty and hunger by 2015.

With a contribution of a 4 million euros from the European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO) for Pakistan, the European Commission (EC) provides its largest contribution since 1992 – some 214 million euros - to WFP operations around the globe in its effort to save lives and feed the hungry poor.

Brussels - WFP welcomes a cash donation of five million euros from Belgium which will allow the agency to provide urgently needed food to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Niger, Mali, South Sudan, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
