World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

SAME – Emergency response capacity in Timor-Leste has been given a considerable boost with the opening of three warehouses built or refurbished by funds donated by the Australian Government, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced Monday.

DILI – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) thanked the Government of Japan on Thursday for its generous donation of Japanese Yen 220,000,000 (US$ 2.4 million) to support mother and child nutrition programmes in Timor-Leste.

FAO has called for a renewed commitment to guarantee the right to food for the world's hundreds of millions of hungry people.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announces plans to assist the Government of Timor-Leste in meeting the food needs of people living in communities affected by an ongoing drought that has reduced food availability in many parts of the nation and appealed to donors for additional support.

Persistent drought and plagues of locusts ravaged Timor-Leste’s harvest in 2007, cutting production of major crops by as much as 30 per cent and leaving one-fifth of the population in need of food assistance, says a report issued today by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and WFP.

A WFP official meeting with the Timor-Leste Prime Minister has confirmed the agency\'s commitment to the food security of people in the troubled country.

WFP will provide food aid to 100,000 people in Timor Leste over the next six months at a cost of US$5.2 million to help avert a humanitarian crisis caused by political unrest and violence.

Tens of thousands of people displaced by the recent unrest in Timor Leste, both in the countryside as well as thousands who stayed at home in the capital, Dili, are in urgent need of food aid, according to assessments by WFP and its partners.
