Assistance to Disadvantaged Rural Communities Affected by Food Insecurity - Tunisia

Tunisia is currently going through a political, social and economic transition, following the protests and demonstrations in January 2011, which led to the ousting of the former President and his government. Following elections for a Constituent Assembly, an interim Government has been appointed, pending parliamentary and presidential elections.

The economy has contracted and the general deterioration of economic conditions is adding to the vulnerability of the country’s poor. Tunisia continues to be affected by the Libya crisis, as cross-border trade has not resumed due to security problems close to the border. Unemployment is the most important driver of poverty and food insecurity, and also the most pressing social issue.
