World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

World Food Programme (WFP) has moved to engage farmers on how best they can process cassava for value addition in Northern Uganda so as not to miss out on extra revenues from the crop. According to WFP programme officer in Pader and Agago, Ms Judith Lumu, they expect to harvest 4,300 metric tonnes of cassava from 480 acres of land of which, some will be eaten as tubers and the rest processed.

THE World Food Programme (WFP) will buy over 13,000 tonnes of maize from farmers in Namayingo district this year, a top official said last week.

AS a minister responsible for relief in the country, the challenge that the ministry has had to grapple with arising from the prolonged drought that the country faced from June 2010 to March 2011 was the lack of vegetables for almost all households. RONALD Masaba, a resident of Jinja district has been involved in large scale maize farming for nine years. His breakthrough in agriculture came three years ago. He secured sh3m loan from a local commercial bank using his high quality unsold stock as collateral security. He also had an opportunity of selling his produce at the highest price ever to the World Food Programme (WFP) without going through the middlemen.

THE World Food Programme (WFP) is working with 4,200 farmers in seven sub-counties in Pader and Agago districts to process cassava tubers into quality flour for export. Judith Nalumu Lumu, the WFP head of the sub-office in Pader, said in a press conference on Monday that under the United Nations Peace Building Fund, WFP had began to support cassava value-addition in northern Uganda.

THE World Food Programme (WFP) is to support more than 440,000 people in Karamoja. A statement issued on Wednesday said WFP had expanded its assets-creation programme to help strengthen livelihoods in the region.

THE US govt will contribute $9m to the World Food Programme's support to refugees, malnourished children, and other vulnerable groups in the Karamoja. The money will be disbursed under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Stephen Omandi scratched out the number "55" on the sign advertising buckets of maize and wrote in the new price: 60 Kenya shillings. The price hike amounted to only $0.06. But for the residents of Nairobi's largest slum, where most people live on $1 a day, that 10 percent increase is enough to make the essential food stuff unaffordable.(..)Many of the slum's youngest are fed by the World Food Program or aid groups.

THE World Food Programme (WFP) on Wednesday temporarily suspended food aid to Karamoja schools due to lack of funds. The head of the Moroto zonal office, Sankoh Bai Mankay, advised the schools to prepare one meal a day for the learners.

The Office of the Prime Minister has cleared 6,184 acres of farm land in Karamoja and supplied the communities with maize, beans, sorghum, peas and cassava cuttings as part of interventions to ensure food security in the region.(..)Representing the development partners, the World Food Programme country representative, Stanlake Samkange, said they had shifted their approach in Karamoja from humanitarian activities to funding development opportunities.
