KAMPALA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has leased its 5,000 metric ton capacity warehouse in Gulu town to a private company Afgri-Gulu Ltd, for a groundbreaking venture that will conduct normal grain trade and at the same time operate the warehouse receipt system. The development will empower more than 9,000 smallholder farmer groups.

GOMA –The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has begun food distributions to 74,000 people affected by armed conflict in the Beni region of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Inhabitants have been returning to this remote area of North Kivu near the Ugandan border following attacks and occupation by rebels in the latter half of last year.

JINJA – In a commissioning ceremony today, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) together with the Government of Uganda put grain processing equipment into service to help small-scale farmers in the Jinja area to improve the quality of their grain, store it more safely and access markets.

KAMPALA – The Government of Brazil today made its first contribution to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Uganda: some 2,000 metric tons of rice worth about US$1 million. The rice will be used over the coming months to provide 155,000 refugees with relief assistance.
