Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. Three quarters of Haitians live on less than US$2 per day and 56 percent on less than US$1 per day. Haiti is a food deficit country. It relies heavily on imported food – 48 percent of national consumed food is imported, 47 percent is produced locally while food assistance fills 5 percent of the national needs. WFP is urgently appealing for further commitments by governments, private companies and individuals to support the scale-up and extension of its earthquake response operations in Haiti (See budget revision). Announced contributions to WFP operations amount to US$243 million. Significant in-kind donations of food, equipment and expertise have also been committed.
Donors to WFP’s operations in Haiti include Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malawi, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Republic of Korea, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom, and the United States as well as the American Red Cross and other private sector entities. WFP has also secured funds from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund.
