15-Second Overview

The Syrian crisis is now going into its fourth year. Having fled their homes to escape the conflict, millions of Syrians are now without jobs, money or reliable access to food. WFP food distributions are going ahead, despite difficulties and in March we dispatched enough for 4 million people. Our greatest challenge right now is getting access to besieged communities inside Syria. WFP is also providing assistance for almost 1.5 million refugees in neighbouring countries.

WFP Response

  • A UN humanitarian Convoy has crossed the Turkish border into northern Syria for the first time since the conflict began carrying supplies from UN agencies.

  • WFP has delivered food rations to previously inaccessible areas in rural Homs, Ar-Raqqa Governorate, and camps north of Idlib, in Syria.

  • Every month, WFP provides people inside Syria with food rations including flour, cooking oil, pulses, sugar and some canned food.
  • Working with UNICEF, we are providing special food products to prevent and treat malnutrition among children.
  • Road access into Syria’s northeastern Al Hassakeh Governorate remains perilous for aid agencies. WFP is continuing airlifts into the region.
  • Outside of Syria, WFP is currently providing food to around 1.5 million refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq and Turkey.
  • Assistance to refugees is mostly through food vouchers, which allow families to choose their food. They also help the local economy.

  • We are also providing snacks to school children in refugee camps in Iraq and Jordan.

  • WFP provides and coordinates logistics services for the humanitarian community.
