Malians Hit By Conflict Still Need Our Help, Says WFP Head

During her recent trip to Mali, WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin met with families forced from their homes by the ongoing violence in the country's north. She also called on the international community not to forget abouty the people affected by the fighting and to continue supporting humanitarian efforts to assist them.

WFP is reaching about 1.5 million people a month inside Syria with vital food assistance and is also helping the hundreds of thousands of refugees who have fled into neighbouring countries.

"No child should go hungry because of the crisis in Syria and no one country is responsible for ensuring that child receives the support that he or she needs," said WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin ahead of a conference among donor governments in Kuwait. WFP needs an estimated $260 million to continue assisting families affected by the fighting in Syria.

What We're Doing At Davos

WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin is in Davos, Switzerland this week to engage with world leaders at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum on the issues of hunger and food security. She says the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria is at the top of the agenda.

Food Vouchers A Win-Win For Syrian Refugees

During her visit to the Kilis refugee camp in Turkey, WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin went to a local food shop where Syrian families are using food vouchers to buy fresh produce, meat and cheese. The programme gives refugees the freedom to choose which foods to buy while giving a boost to the local economy. That makes it a "win-win" for both Syrian families and the host community in Turkey, Cousin said.
