Dungkar Drupka runs WFP’s food assistance operations in the south Asian nation of Bhutan. In this article he describes his impoverished childhood in a mountain village and his first experiences of school. He also talks about a conversation he had with a school boy he met many years later, when visiting a remote school as WFP representative.

WFP supports the Royal Government of Bhutan in its policy of improving access to education by providing daily meals to school children particularly to those from poor and food insecure families in remote areas. This activity supports the nationwide trends of increased enrolment and attendance rates and reduced dropout rates. The provision for meals also improves the short term nutritional status of school going children and thus supports their concentration and cognitive capacities.

The sight of dark clouds gathering over the distant hills makes 10-year old Sangay Lhamo frown. For this class two student of Pangna community primary school in the central district of Dagana, the rainy season is not at all a welcome change. Having to walk at least four hours to and from school five days a week, Sangay told Kuensel that the tiring journey gets worse with the rains.(..)Five schools have resorted to informal boarding facilities, where the world food program (WFP) provides breakfast and lunch, and the students, who stay in makeshift huts near the school, prepare their own dinner.

The world food program (WFP), in collaboration with Bhutan post, launched yesterday a series of postal stamps, which reflect their support to various sectors in Bhutan. The stamps were launched in Thimphu as WFP celebrated its 35th anniversary. (..) School feeding has been a major activity since the start of WFP assistance in 1974, with increased enrollment and attendance as their main goals. In 2008, WFP utilised around USD 4m – donations received – in purchasing food commodities and for other assistance, such as construction of hostel and purchasing fuel-efficient stoves for schools.

In this refugee camp in Nepal, nearly 100,000 Bhutanese natives have received WFP food assistance since their arrival in the early 1990's. These refugees have made a life for themselves in this small camp, receiving food rations and various kinds of vocational training from WFP.
