The insufficient rainfall has destroyed the livelihoods of people who mainly depend on agricultural production to provide for their families. WFP is implementing a food-for-assets project to boost the resilience of vulnerable people in Karusi and enable them to cope better with climatic shocks. The participants receive cash transfers which allow households to purchase food to meet their nutritional needs while they work on communal assets. Thanks to the support of the German Government, the project is targeting 1,630 of the most vulnerable households in the food-insecure communes of Bugenyuzi and Gitaramuka.  Burundi Local Africa Cash and Vouchers Fri, 26 Aug 2016 07:54:43 +0000 Michel Rwamo 650242 at http://www.wfp.org Protracted Conflicts Causing Alarming Spikes In Severe Hunger http://www.wfp.org/news/news-release/protracted-conflicts-causing-alarming-spikes-severe-hunger Briefs for UN Security Council highlight how millions of people remain trapped in a vicious cycle of violence and hunger RBA Afghanistan Burundi Cameroon Central African Republic Chad Colombia Congo, Democratic Republic of the Côte d'Ivoire Guinea-Bissau Haiti Iraq Lebanon Liberia Mali Niger Nigeria South Sudan Sudan Syrian Arab Republic Yemen Global Rome-based agencies (RBAs) Fri, 29 Jul 2016 07:58:32 +0000 WFP 650109 at http://www.wfp.org Germany Gives Crucial Support For Refugees In East Africa http://www.wfp.org/news/news-release/germany-gives-crucial-support-refugees-east-africa DAR ES SALAAM – The Government of Germany has today announced a contribution of €16.5 million to support refugees in East Africa. The assessment found that the most affected provinces were Kirundo in the north, Makamba in the south, and the capital, Bujumbura Mairie. WFP is providing vital food assistance that is both saving lives and giving people hope. Many have crossed into Tanzania where they are being assisted by the World Food Programme, the UN's refugee agency UNHCR and other humanitarian organisations. However, it is a difficult journey, especially for the sick, the elderly and for children. Text transcript of this video WFP in Action Burundi Tanzania, United Republic of English Global Africa Video stories Fri, 29 May 2015 15:59:30 +0000 WFP 646561 at http://www.wfp.org WFP Mounts Emergency Operation to Provide Food for Refugees Fleeing Burundi (For the Media) http://www.wfp.org/videos/wfp-mounts-emergency-operation-provide-food-refugees-fleeing-burundi-media WFP is concerned that the political crisis in Burundi could lead to a humanitarian crisis. It is already causing tens of thousands of people to flee to neighbouring countries.  It is also affecting food security inside Burundi, which is already one of the poorest and most food insecure countries on earth. WFP is providing food and nutrition assistance to more than 60,000 Burundian refugees who have fled to Rwanda, Tanzania and DRC and that number is growing. WFP and other humanitarian partners are preparing to assist more if needed. WFP is providing ready-to-eat food (dates) to refugees as they arrive at Kagunga village and to those in transit to Nyarugusu Refugee Camp. On arrival at the camp and Kigoma Stadium, refugees are served with a hot meal and receive High Energy Biscuits once registered, WFP provides them with a two-week dry food ration of maize, beans, oil, salt and Super Cereal (fortified Corn Soya blend).  They will be incorporated into WFP’s ongoing General Food Distribution and other programmes once they are settled in a camp.
