A Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) is undertaken by the Food and Agriculture Organization and WFP, usually for emergencies related to agricultural production or overall food availability problems. It assesses the seriousness of a crisis situation, by looking at the food produced nationally and the extent to which poor people can meet their basic food needs.
A CFSAM analyses the food security situation at two different levels.
At the macro level, the mission analyses the overall economic situation, agricultural production and market conditions, and the supply and demand situation for staple foods. It estimates the uncovered staple food import requirements for the coming year.
At the micro level, the mission analyses the way households access food (for example through their own production, or buying food on the markets). It makes estimates of the access shortfalls and assistance that will be required.
