Vodafone - Saving lives in emergencies through ICT

"In emergencies, communications saves lives. Our work with WFP has increased the effectiveness of ICT disaster response, helping to ensure that essential communications networks are up and running as quickly as possible - not just for WFP but for the entire humanitarian community.
Adele Waugman, Head of United Nations Foundation & Vodafone Foundation Technology Partnership

In a groundbreaking partnership, the Vodafone Foundation, the United Nations Foundation (UNF) and WFP launched the first-ever Global Partnership for Emergency Communications to help WFP and the entire humanitarian community to improve their response in emergencies. When roads, telephones and electricity lines are destroyed, it is crucial that relief workers are able to communicate in order to save lives. This is why telecommunications and information technology experts always need to be among the first on the scene of an emergency.

Through this partnership, Vodafone has helped WFP strengthen its ability to set up life-saving communications networks in the immediate aftermath of a humanitarian disaster through the training and sharing of best practice among IT personnel across the humanitarian community, as well as accessing vital equipment needed on the ground in an emergency.
