Fleet management
Although WFP strives to use commercial providers where land transport is required, sometimes WFP must depend on its own fleet to access all-terrain trucks, which are best prepared to steer the toughest of road conditions.
Nearly 800 trucks make up WFP’s worldwide fleet along with around 90 repair workshops - both permanent and mobile - which are strategically positioned and equipped with qualified staff and maintenance equipment should WFP vehicles need repair.
Special Project: The Logistics Intervention Fleet
In 2011, WFP launched a global initiative to make efficient use of its truck surpluses. Through strategically-based regional truck fleets, WFP is able to consolidate transport surpluses and immediately redistribute them as necessary to support emergency response capacities within a region -- speed deployment time and significantly decrease costs. The first of these strategic fleets, based in Kampala, Uganda, has ensured that all participating countries in East Africa have immediate access to reliable trucks when they most need them.
