    WFP And Iraq Government Aim To Introduce Electronic Food Vouchers

    BAGHDAD – In a technical workshop starting today, the Government of Iraq and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) will discuss the potential introduction of electronic food vouchers in the Iraqi Public Distribution System (PDS). They will be joined by financial payments experts from MasterCard, the leading global technology and payments company, which, under a global partnership, is partnering with WFP to strengthen its delivery of “digital food,” in the form of vouchers.

    UN: Global Malnutrition Costs Are Unacceptable

    Source: VOA News Global hunger, poor nutrition and obesity are costing the world trillions of dollars in health costs and lost productivity, according to a new report from the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO report says fighting hunger is not enough. Tackling the more complex problem of malnutrition calls for action across the entire food system, from farm to fork. About 870 million people worldwide are hungry, according to the FAO. But malnutrition is about more than just hunger.

    WFP Sends Food Aid To Al-Qusayr And Further Upscales Its Emergency Operation For Syrians

    DAMASCUS – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has distributed urgent food aid to vulnerable families in Al-Qusayr where some of the heaviest fighting in Syria has taken place in recent weeks.   Meanwhile the United Nations today announced projected financial costs for the humanitarian operation totalling US$4.4 billion; this figure represents the escalating needs just for the balance of 2013.   The WFP share of this appeal, US$1 billion, will provide food assistance for the growing refugee population outside Syria as well as the increasing numbers of those inside the country without access to food.

    WFP's Ingolfur Palsson, a member of the WFP team assisting Syrian refugees in Lebanon, says that as more and more Syrians flee across the border, it's getting harder to meet their food needs. On June 7, UN humanitarian agencies revised upwards their assessment of the needs of Syrians affected by the conflict. Out of 6.8 million Syrians currently in need of humanitarian assistance, 4 million need food.
