The summit hosted by the African Union and backed by the UN in Nairobi on 7 November brought together the UNSG Ban Ki-Moon, Presidents of DRC and Rwanda, as well as the leaders of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and South Africa. In their joint statement, the Heads of State called for an immediate ceasefire and setting up a humanitarian corridor throughout North Kivu so that the humanitarian crisis and tragedy can be addressed. They also called on the UN and all humanitarian agencies assisting those affected to continue to sustain and increase their support. WFP will increase its assistance to IDPs if these recommendations are well implemented.
WFP took advantage of the relative calm that prevails in areas around Goma to simultaneously distribute food to IDPs in six camps. The operation started on 5 November for three days. 540 mt of food were distributed to approximately 135,000 beneficiaries for 10 days.
