COPENHAGEN - The supervisory body of the United Nations World Food Programme, the WFP Executive Board, has appointed the Permanent Representative of Denmark to the UN agencies in Rome, Poul Skytte Christoffersen, as its new Executive Board President.
This week, Christoffersen took over the Chair of the WFP Executive Board, which is meeting at WFP headquarters in Rome to discuss the response to the Asian tsunami and other major WFP operations.
Christoffersen, who was proposed by the group of countries from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development represented on WFP's Board, takes over from Miguel Barreto from Peru, for one year until the beginning of 2006.
Last year, as Vice-President of the Board, Christoffersen visited a number of WFP projects in the field to gain first-hand knowledge of the agency's operations. He is a career diplomat, with experience mainly related to institutions of European co-operation.
Denmark contributed US$43 million to WFP last year, making it the 11th largest donor overall and the third largest on a per capita basis.
The WFP Executive Board is made up of representatives of 36 member states, elected by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. It is responsible for providing inter-governmental supervision and direction to the WFP management.
WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency. Each year, we feed an average of 90 million people, including 56 million hungry children, in more than 80 countries.
