The Republic Of Korea Helps WFP Support Vulnerable People In Sudan
KHARTOUM - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed a contribution of US$300,000 from the Government of the Republic of Korea to help WFP support more than 90,000 children and pregnant and nursing women for one month.
WFP will use the contribution to purchase Super Cereal; a specialized nutritional product that helps prevent malnutrition.
“South Korea has been a long-standing partner and strong supporter of WFP’s humanitarian activities in Sudan,” said WFP Sudan Country Director Adnan Khan. “This contribution will help us continue to work on breaking the cycle of hunger and poverty; malnourished mothers give birth to malnourished babies which condemns them to a life of poverty and hunger.”
In addition to assisting nutrition programmes, South Korea has also funded WFP’s cash and food vouchers programme in Darfur through which people can buy food items of their choice at participating local retailers. This innovative support gives people the opportunity to get fresh produce which is not included in traditional food assistance, thus diversifying their diets, and at the same time boosting the local economy by engaging small-scale traders.
Korean Ambassador to Sudan, H.E. Park Won-sup said he is glad that Korea made some contribution to solving the malnutrition in Sudan. He mentioned that he looked forward to a continued support from Korea, which is the only country that emerged from an aid recipient to an aid among the countries that became independent since World War II. Also, Ambassador Park appreciated the hard work of the WFP in solving humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
In 2014, the Republic of Korea made a similar contribution of US$300,000 towards WFP’s emergency operation in Sudan. As with this year, WFP used the funds to purchase supplementary nutritional products to prevent malnutrition.
In July 2015, WFP launched a new two-year plan in Sudan to provide 5.2 million people by mid-2017 with life-saving food assistance, nutrition support as well as recovery and resilience-building activities to help communities become self-reliant. Included in this group are 1.8 million displaced people in Darfur.
