WFP is working closely with the authorities in the Philippines, assisting thousands of Filipinos whose lives were devastated after Saturday’s deadly tropical storm tore through the country, flooding people’s homes and destroying assets.
As an initial step, we will provide vital food rations to approximately 180,000 Filipinos in the worst-affected areas who are struggling to cope with the impact of the storm.
On Sunday, WFP participated in a government-organized helicopter fly-over of the worst affected areas. A joint rapid needs assessment between the government and UN agencies is currently underway.
I want to assure the people and Government of the Philippines of our support for food assistance as part of a swift and coordinated recovery effort. I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives and want to extend my condolences to families who have lost loved ones and those whose livelihoods have been shattered.
