"Today is World Environment Day, when all United Nations staff are encouraged to make a personal commitment to environmental sustainability.
In my opening remarks to the WFP Executive Board on 4 June, I acknowledged that ensuring an effective, resource-efficient WFP starts at the top, with me and our executive management team.
For the Deputy Executive Directors and myself, I announced a downgrade of entitlements, in line with those of all other WFP staff. Specifically, I am requiring our use of economy class tickets for short- and medium-haul flights. I am also encouraging staff to use travel alternatives such as videoconferencing services.
These actions demonstrate WFP’s commitment to be financially responsible and will also contribute to a reduction in WFP’s carbon footprint. I look forward to working with all WFP staff to support initiatives that will make WFP more environmentally sustainable and resource efficient at the same time."
