ROME The United Nations World Ford Programme warmly congratulates Cesaria Evora for winning the prestigious Grammy Award last night for her 2003 album "Voz D'Amor", under the category of Best Contemporary World Music Album.
It is the first Grammy for the Cape Verdian singer who was last year appointed a WFP Ambassador Against Hunger. Evora, one of the greatest living African vocalists, had been nominated for a Grammy award five times previously.
One of the songs from the award-winning album, "Mar de Canal", was dedicated to WFP. In December 2003 Evora gave a concert in Rome to support the WFP's School Feeding programme, which raised enough money to give a school meal to 95,000 pupils for one day.
The 63-year-old has long campaigned on behalf of underprivileged women and children in her home country. She is known as the Barefoot Diva because of her preference for appearing on stage barefoot to show support for the poor of Cape Verde.
Thanks to WFP, more than 100,000 school children all over the Cape Verde islands receive a school meal during their lunch break. Globally, WFP provides a hot and nutritious meal to more than 15.6 million children in 62 countries.
The campaign aims not only to make sure children are well nourished, but that by providing food, their parents are also encouraged to send the children to school .
WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency. In 2003 WFP fed nearly 104 million people in 81 countries including most of the world's refugees and internally displaced people.
WFP Global School Feeding Campaign -- As the largest provider of nutritious meals to poor school children, WFP has launched a global campaign aimed at ensuring the world's 300 million undernourished children are educated.
