Disaster Risk Reduction can protect smallholder farmers, experts say

LAHORE – A new report launched today shows that with adequate investments in disaster risk reduction, small-holder farmers in Punjab could better withstand climate-related shocks. Calling for increased investments in this area, the report advocates for the Rural Resilience-building approach (R4), pioneered by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and OXFAM.

New Stunting Prevention Initiative Launched By Government Of Balochistan And WFP

QUETTA – A new programme to prevent stunting among children in Pakistan’s Balochistan province has been launched by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with the provincial government’s Planning and Development Department. The three-year project in Pishin district will provide nutrition support to more than 20,000 pregnant and nursing women, and children under five years of age.

WFP Launches Stunting Prevention Initiative In Kurram Agency, FATA

PESHAWAR – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), in partnership with the Directorate of Health Services in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan, has formally launched a programme to prevent stunting in the Kurram Agency of FATA. Stunting occurs when a child’s growth and development is impaired from poor nutrition. The effort aims to prevent chronic malnutrition in children under five years of age as well as in pregnant women and nursing mothers. In the Kurram Agency, stunting rates stand at 57.6 percent, which is alarmingly high and well above the global average.

WFP Welcomes Contribution From USA To Support Pakistanis In Need

ISLAMABAD – The most vulnerable people in Pakistan will continue to receive assistance from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) thanks to a contribution of US$25 million from the United States government. The donation was announced by the “Food for Peace” Office of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and will allow WFP to carry on with programmes providing food, cash and education for families in the poorest parts of Pakistan, as well as working to improve the nutrition of women and children throughout the country.

Canada Funds Strategic Humanitarian Response Facility In Gilgit Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is constructing a Humanitarian Response Facility (HRF) in the Gilgit Baltistan (GB) –the northern area of Pakistan, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada. This will be the seventh HRF built in Pakistan as part of a strategic network of storage facilities to help the Government and humanitarian community better prepare for and respond to disasters.

First Cash Assistance To Secondary Girl Students Using Biometrics In Fata

FATA - The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched its first cash-based assistance for secondary school girls in Pakistan and is using biometric attendance data for the first time as part of its support to the FATA Secretariat education programme.
