If any link the supply chain beaks, the operation will come to standstill. Bad weather, as well as bandits and funding constraints, can spell disaster. In September, 20 trucks were stranded only a few kilometres from the warehouses because of flooding, so grain was hauled across a swollen river on rafts.

The enormous Ilyushin 76, a four jet engine, Russian-made cargo plane, slows to almost stalling speed and opens its rear doors. At precisely the right moment, the flight crew release the food. The Ilyushin carries a food payload of 36 tons.
