Investing In Children

In Armenia, WFP reaches 50,000 primary schoolchildren in seven of the country's poorest provinces, promoting long-term investment in human capital. The programme is reaching half of all primary schoolchildren in the country.

Baking For A Better Future

A school cook preparing bread dough for the children’s lunch. WFP provides schools with vegetable oil and wheat flour that are enriched with mineral and vitamins. Parents cooperate to complement the school meal with other food items to serve the children a full meal during the school day.

Getting Two Birds With One Programme

WFP school meals project in Armenia has a twofold objective: providing school meals to primary schoolchildren in the poorest and most food insecure regions of Armenia and supporting the government in developing a national school meals programme.

The First Bite
Almost 80 to 85 percent of children benefiting from WFP school meals project do not breakfast before going to school. Most parents rely on the morning meals their children get at school.

Potential Future Mathematicians

Armenian children are especially good at mathematics, which they excel at. But it is not only mathematics they’re good at; children in Armenia as well as their parents take education very seriously.

Looking Ahead

Schoolchildren in Armenia, as in many countries where WFP implements its school meals projects, have shown a better overall school performance. This has encouraged the government to implement a national school meals pilot project in 2013 in a move that paves the way to taking over from WFP within an agreed timeframe. The Armenian government plans to integrate school meals into the national plan.
