World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

A history of conflict in Kachin State has forced over 85,000 people to flee their homes and move into either camps or the homes of relatives and friends.

Many of the displaced people receive monthly WFP assistance -- either rations which are cooked in communal kitchens or in households.

For many of the displaced, WFP’s assistance is the difference between going hungry or meeting their daily food needs.

A rise in inter-communal violence prompted WFP to scale-up its food assistance to the affected people in the region.

Since the start of the crisis in June 2012, WFP has distributed over 17,400 tons of food to displaced communities.

In mid-2012, inter-communal violence in Rakhine State displaced over 120,000 people.

WFP scaled up its assistance to displaced people in the region, and now reaches around 125,000 people a month in Rakhine.

As the rainy season approaches, concerns over the expected deterioration of the health, sanitation and nutrition status of camp residents and over the stability of makeshift shelters not being able to withstand the rain arise.
