Nyunt Maung U Nyunt Maung's arms and legs were seriously injured when an angry crowd caught him and beat him in Meiktila. He managed to flee and is now living at the District Stadium, along with 1,600 other displaced people. In total, over 12,000 people were displaced during the outbreak of violence in Meiktila and surrounding townships in March 2013. WFP is providing food rations at seven camp locations around Meiktila.

Daw Htwe

Daw Htwe is 90 years old and a victim of the violence that swept Meiktila in March 2013. Her son helped her to escape the smoke and fire from nearby burning houses, and they were brought to a temporary shelter at a high school. Although she is not feeling well, movement restrictions prevent her from leaving the camp to stay with a son in another township of Mandalay. "I am too old to stay in the camp," she says.

A Mar Tin Daw A Mar Tin lost everything when mobs began to burn down homes in the Thiri Mingilar section of Meiktila. She fled with her family, and is now temporarily housed at a high school. "I have two school-age kids. I do not know how to send them back to school," she says. "My house and livestock are gone. I have no relatives to rely on."

Tun Tun Win Ko Tun Tun Win repaired bicycles for a living before violence in Meiktila forced him from his home in March 2013. During the violence, he fled into the forest with his family, and hid there until found by security forces the next day. He lost his home, and is staying at the national stadium, which is serving as an IDP camp.

Tin Maung Oo Tin Maung Oo fled violence in Meiktila in March 2013 with his family, and is currently receiving WFP rations at a temporary shelter at the District Stadium. Unlike other camp people worried to return, he is optimistic. "My house was also burned like the others, but I am not too concerned to go back. My boss is Buddhist, and he comes to see me almost every day and encourages me to drive again."
