Illiteracy is common throughout Burundi therefore, grains of maize are used to help food-for-work participants understand the number of participants needed for any given project. Food-for-work offers food assistance in exchange for community organized infrastructure projects.

Any place is a good place for a meeting in rural Burundi. WFP field monitors discuss road work plans with participants in a food-for-work activity from which they receive maize in exchange for their labour.
