In CAR, WFP providing school meals to more than 50,000 in capital Bangui

In Central African Republic (CAR), two thirds of schools remain closed as violence and unrest continue. But students are gradually finding their way back to school. WFP is supporting them through daily school meals, often the only food they eat during the day.

"We urgently need support from donors so we won’t start running out of food. We are providing food for hungry people wherever we can in CAR. But insecurity is the biggest challenge.” WFP West Africa Regional Director Denise Brown.

Overview

 The Central African Republic (C.A.R.) has been caught up in the worst  political and humanitarian crisis of its history for over a year. With more than 600,000 people internally displaced as of May 2014, persistent violence is affecting the entire population in C.A.R and 1.6 million people are food insecured. The crisis has become one of the main challenges facing humanitarian and international communities.
